I found this article last month and have let it sit for a bit. While this blog may at first appear to be off-topic, it’s not…my friend was diagnosed with cervical cancer from HPV infection from her husband. She was told that there is no way to test a man for the HPV virus. The only way to know that there is HPV is if the woman has an abnormal PAP smear, etc.

I found it hard to believe that a virus exists that can be transmitted from one human to another could not be tested. I still find it hard to believe and this is where I bring this back to topic…maybe now that there is evidence of HPV in prostate cancer, there might be a way to use this information to create some diagnostic formula/test via the prostate…any cancer prevented is great news no matter who benefits.

I’d like to see more research dollars go into cross-analyzing male and female reproductive diseases and disorders, as there has to be a connection somewhere between one and the other…

High-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are sexually transmitted and have been associated with several human carcinomas especially cervical and colorectal. On the other hand, a small number of studies have examined the presence of high-risk HPV in human prostate cancer tissues. Currently, the presence and role of high-risk HPV infections in prostate carcinogenesis remain unclear because of the limited number of investigations. This raises the question whether high-risk HPV infections play any role in human prostate cancer development. However, other investigators and our group were able to immortalize normal and cancer prostate epithelial cells in vitro by E6/E7 of HPV type 16. In this paper, we propose the hypothesis that normal and cancer prostate epithelial cells are susceptible to persistent HPV infections; therefore, high-risk HPV infections play an important role in the progression of prostate cancer. We believe that an international collaboration of epidemiological studies and more molecular biology investigations are necessary to answer these important questions.

At any rate, any bonafide research that can further determine causes of diseases will most certainly benefit humans the world over.

The following Wellness I.Q. Test came from my AlternativeAnswers Group. What I like about this wellness quiz is that, even if you don’t want to answer all of the questions or even know what the answers would be (for people starting out on their wellness paths), just reading them will give you things to think about. Like actually paying attention to an aspect of your life you took for granted. Some of the questions, I had to actually remember the last time I did/didn’t do something…anyway, the point is that a quiz like this will raise your awareness of your personal wellness factors and hopefully begin to make that positive difference in one’s life and overall health.

Fri Jun 13, 2008 5:51 am (PDT)

Good Morning!

This week I have put together a series of different articles based on
helping all of us to know and understand the components in a
diagnosis and tools that may help in determining a proper and
affective way in determining the facts.

Better Diagnosis Series: The Wellness I.Q. Test

This Wellness I.Q. Test has been provided by Dr. Robert Ivker,
president of the American Holistic Medical Association.
I thank him.

The purpose of this test is to provide you with a number of methods
to enhance your health, and to help you experience being more fully
alive. There are six basic dimensions of health:

Physical health - a state of heightened energy and vitality; freedom
from pain, disability, and disease; the ability to perform
challenging physical feats.

Environmental health - living in harmony (neither harming nor being
harmed) with and feeling nurtured by your environment; a condition of
respect and appreciation for your home, nature, and the earth.

Mental health - encompasses peace of mind, optimism, a job that you
love doing, the ability to forgive, and a sense of humor.

Emotional health - identifying, expressing, experiencing, and
accepting all of your feelings.

Spiritual health - a condition marked by a diminished sense of fear
and the daily experience of unconditional love, joy, gratitude, and a
personal relationship with your God (or an awareness of an inner
source of infinite power and compassion.)

Social health - consists of a strong, positive connection to others
in community, family, and intimacy with one or more people.

If you’d like a better sense of your own state of wholeness and
balance, and to be able to identify your strengths and weaknesses,
then answer the following questions and total your score.

Each response will be a number from 0 to 5. Please refer to the
frequency described within the parentheses (e.g. 2 to 4x/week) when
answering questions about an activity, e.g., “Do You maintain a
healthy diet?”

However, when the question refers to an attitude or an emotion (Most
of the Mind and Spirit questions, such as “Do you have a sense of
humor?”) then the response is more subjective, less exact, and you
can refer only to the terms describing the frequency, such as “often”
or “daily.”

Scoring is as follows:
0 = Never or almost never (once a year or less)
1 = Seldom (2 to 12x/year)

In doing my web reading and research I came across a blog and website that I think is the real deal. Dan has great information about prostate health and is written in terms that anyone can understand and relate to. I sent him the following email and have decided to take the focus of my blog to a different place than what we see on the web.

After researching the components of our ProstatePure Plus product, which led me to other incredibly interesting information, technology and philosophy, it is my firm belief that the cause of cancer, or all diseases as well as mental health conditions, is due to the lack of proper nutrients and nutrition in our food supply.

I will be taking my blogs down that road, for it is also my belief that if we re-mineralize our soil and make true changes in the way we mass produce our food, within two generations of human beings eating once again foods that are grown with the full compliment of minerals each plant was meant to have, we will eliminate most if not all disease.

Huge statement, I know…..but in the next few weeks, I will back it all up….

Dan:

I found your website through Google Reader, please allow me to introduce myself to you. I am Karen M and I work for a company called Wellness Partners that is an web-based supplement and wellness products company. I was hired to research and write about the ingredients to their ProstatePure Plus product, then to reach out to others interested in not only their health, but prostate health/cancer as well. I have a blog site www.ProstatePrincess.com. I thoroughly enjoyed your site, it’s educational without being pushy or off-setting and easy to read.

If you don’t mind, I’d like to point you in a couple of directions for more information that I think might be of use to your readers. In doing my research the one thing that has made me sit up and take notice as well as give me hope to give to others is nutrition. I’m not talking about just eating right, cutting out saturated fats, red meat, etc. all of which are very important to any type of cancer one might be facing, but consuming foods that are nutrient-rich as nature intended them to be.

One study I would like to refer you to, then you might refer your readers to is one that was published in 2005 by the AUA, The Journal of Urology, Vol.174,1065-1070, September 2005 DOI: 10.1097/01.ju.0000169487.49018.73 Intensive Lifestyle Changes May Affect the Progression of Prostate Cancer. Unfortunately, I misplaced my complete report and not just the abstract, however, it’s well worth the money to acquire this study.

This study proved that with intensive lifestyle changes (intensive as in changing to a supplemented vegan diet, regular exercise, relaxation techniques taught and implemented as well as mandatory support once a week for the duration of the study), cancer’s progression is not only stopped in its tracks, it can be reversed or eliminated completely! This is very good reading and it’s my personal belief that this is the cure to cancer and I will go into that a little further in a moment.

Another website you might want to refer your readers to is www.cancerfightingstrategies.com, while they do sell their own products at the end of the website, the initial 11 everyday things you can start right now, today are listed there and I also believe that will help one’s body to fight the disease. Very good educational material.

The main reason we have the diseases and mental conditions we do today is that our food is nutrient-deficient. The current commercial farming practices has left the food we consume void of the vital minerals nature intended. Farmers today using chemical processes to fertilize the ground as well as pesticides and herbicides used to control pests and weeds are killing us in more ways than one.

First, they are only required to put nitrogen, phosphate and potassium back into the ground….take a tomato for instance, in it’s natural state a tomato has 56 minerals, of which we are lucky to have the main three put back into the ground. A method of remineralizing our soil is through evaporated sea minerals. Sea minerals have all 92 elements from the atomic chart in their perfect proportion every single time. So if the soil growing our food has all of the proper minerals in their proper content, then the food we eat is proper nutrition. As tomatoes have been proven to help in the prevention of prostate cancer through lycopene, can you imagine how much more powerful the lycopene would be if the tomatoes had all 56 naturally-occurring minerals that nature intended?

The idea is to get all of the elements back into our soil, when the plants have everything they need, provided through natural means, then we get everything we need from the plants. Disease attacks our bodies first because our immune systems are compromised, or working double time to keep up with what we demand of ourselves, and then second disease gets an even better foothold on us because of damaged DNA. Give our bodies all of the ammunition it needs to regenerate itself, and it will, in amazingly or seemingly miraculously manner and very quickly. It is because of the already damaged DNA and compromised immune systems that you see patients who have already undergone chemo/radiation for the first diagnosis of cancer, that the second time it comes back, it does with a vengence……our poor bodies have been decimated by the toxicity of the drugs.

Using plants that have been planted in control environments, one plot growing the way they have been done and another one that has been treated with Ocean Grown sea fertilizer, tomatoes since that seems to be my subject today, were exposed to tobacco mosiac fungus (both crops are extremely sensitive to the fungus), the bed that was grown with the Ocean Grown fertilizer showed not one single sign of the disease, while the other bed right next to it grown with the currently-used products, every last tomato plant in that bed died.

Farmers that do use Ocean Grown are finding when they use the sea minerals in other crops that they no longer have to spray for insects, mold or fungus because the plant is in its perfect state of health and no longer attracts these negative elements. Not only that, yields increased along with the nutrient content of the crop. Livestock that has been fed feed grown using the sea minerals are also healthier, they do not display aggressive behavior, especially around feeding time and it take less feed as they are receiving proper nurishment and they require less feed to fill them up. So, take dairy cattle, the milk they produce is far better for you to consume as it has all of the elements in it that nature intended without the chemicals, antibiotics and hormones that are the current practice.

Any way, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your site and would like to link back to your site with your permission as well as engage in conversations about any topic related to prostate health and cancer. It is my firm belief that with a grassroots effort in the US, we can change the way our food is mass produced and processed. So it’s not just about being “organic” it’s about being nutrient-rich by means of a product and process that is 100% natural.

Thanks again for your time.

Sincerely,
Karen Medders
www.ProstatePrincess.com

PS the other item that I would like to bring to your attention is resveratrol. The coolest thing about resveratrol is that when combined with either radiation or chemo, it activates the cancer cells to be receptive to the toxin and that when a patient has taken resveratrol prior to their radiation treatment, it has been found that it take substantially less radiation to activate the cell death that we are seeking to achieve, as resveratrol attracts the toxin to the cancer cells, the healthy cells are being left alone. To me this is HUGE! So until we can get our food chain supply back to a better source of nutrition than what we have right now, resveratrol supplementation is something that both men and women should be using. There are other associated benefits to resveratrol than just how it works to eliminate cancer cells from our bodies, it also lowers blood sugars and diabetics are being taken off their medications over time, with their physician’s knowledge as well as it lowers HDL and raises LDL, thus having cardio benefits as well.

So until next time my friends….

Boy, Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, is a powerhouse of information! I find his writings to be some of the best on the internet. He’s knowledgeable, concise and writes in a manner in which we can all understand.

I have always believed that good old-fashioned sunshine is good for you. I’ve written as much in a previous post on the subject. The following article by Mike just adds more justification to what I’ve known instinctively all my life. Please also follow the link and download his book, I have and it’s a good resource to have.

Did you know you have probably never been told the straight truth
about one of the most potent, yet overlooked, healing nutrients in the
world? In fact, medical groups have actually spent the past three
decades convincing you to avoid this “nutrient” by scaring you into
thinking it causes cancer.

But the truth is far different. Strong clinical evidence proves this
“nutrient” actually prevents and helps REVERSE an astounding number of
serious diseases (and I’ll tell you all about it right here),
including:

* Prostate cancer
* Breast cancer
* Osteoporosis
* Depression
* Gum disease
* Schizophrenia
* Diabetes

Curious what this “nutrient” really is? Let me give you some hints:
It moves at the speed of light. You can feel it (it feels warm), but
you can’t touch it. Without it, there would be no life whatsoever on
planet Earth. And it can’t be patented or sold for profit.

What is it? Sunlight.

I’m talking about natural, healthy sunshine, which enables your body
to make its own lifesaving vitamin D. Today, I want to share with you
the secrets of its health benefits in a fascinating special report
called, “The Healing Power of Sunshine and Vitamin D.” It’s available
for downloading right now at:

http://downloads.truthpublishing.com/Sunlight.pdf
(Adobe Acrobat format)

This special report contains information you probably won’t hear from
your doctor or dermatologist, because it goes against everything they
believe about sunlight. But recent research is proving that not
getting enough sunlight is extremely dangerous to your health because
it causes vitamin D deficiencies that promote chronic disease.

Seeking out sunlight in safe, reasonable doses, on the other hand,
does wonders for your health and may, in fact, render all sorts of
conventional medical therapies irrelevant.

This special report features an interview with Dr. Michael Holick,
one of the world’s leading experts on vitamin D and sunlight. In “The
Healing Power of Sunlight,” he discusses his fascinating research.
You’ll learn things like:

* How vitamin D deficiencies have been directly linked to several
types of cancer.

* In a study of African-American, Latino, and Caucasian women who had
just given birth, 76% were deficient in vitamin D and 81% of the
infants were deficient.

* A study in Finland showed that infants who were deficient in
vitamin D had an 80% increased risk of developing Type-2 diabetes as
an adult.

* 32% of students and doctors in Boston are deficient in vitamin D by
the end of winter.

* 40% to 60% of elderly people are at risk for vitamin D deficiency.

In “The Healing Power of Sunshine and Vitamin D,” Dr. Holick also
explains little-known facts about sunshine and vitamin D. In this
special report, you’ll learn:

* How proper nutrition helps you avoid sunburn without using chemical
sunscreens

* What the right amount of sunlight is for your body

* How vitamin D deficiencies cause prostate cancer, breast cancer,
osteoporosis and other diseases

* The true cause of asthma and why antihistamines only conceal the
symptoms of the disease rather than treating its cause

* How to calculate how much sunlight you need based on your ancestry
and current geographical location

* Seasonal Affective Disorder: how to treat it with sunlight exposure

* Why you can’t get enough vitamin D from diet alone

* Why U.K. dermatologists support more sun exposure, but the U.S.
dermatology association refuses to change its stance

* How a lack of vitamin D may contribute to schizophrenia

* Why it is harder to absorb adequate amounts of calcium without
sufficient vitamin D

Take advantage of this information right now. It’s “must-have”
knowledge that no person should go without. This information has
literally changed my health and my life, and I believe it can change
yours as well.

I was going to write a synopsis of this article for my post, however, upon reading it again, I would like to attribute this post to NaturalNews. It is wonderfully written, full of more information than I could provide, and is a foundation article to my belief that re-mineralizing our soil for food production would bring these minerals back in proper balance to our food supply.

Once we begin growing and consuming food that has all of their mineral needs met, we will see a decline in disease and other disorders that are directly related to mineral deficiency. So please enjoy this article, I found it very enlightening and am personally going to make sure I have sufficient Magnesium in my diet.

(NaturalNews) There is a power and a force in magnesium that cannot be equaled anywhere else in the world of medicine. There is no substitute for magnesium in human physiology; nothing comes even close to it in terms of its effect on overall cell physiology. Without sufficient magnesium, the body accumulates toxins and acid residues, degenerates rapidly, and ages prematurely. It goes against a gale wind of medical science to ignore magnesium chloride used transdermally in the treatment of any chronic or acute disorder, especially cancer.

Magnesium repletion produced rapid disappearance of the periosteal tumors.

Aleksandrowicz et al in Poland conclude that inadequacy of Mg (Magnesium) and antioxidants are important risk factors in predisposing to leukemias. Other researchers found that 46% of the patients admitted to an ICU (Intensive Care Unit) in a tertiary cancer center presented hypomagnesemia.

They concluded that the incidence of hypomagnesemia in critically ill cancer patients is high. In animal studies we find that Mg deficiency has caused lymphopoietic neoplasms in young rats. A study of rats surviving Mg deficiency sufficient to cause death in convulsions during early infancy in some, and cardiorenal lesions weeks later in others, disclosed that some of survivors had thymic nodules or lymphosarcoma.

One would not normally think that Magnesium (Mg) deficiency can paradoxically increase the risk of, or protect against cancer yet we will find that just as severe dehydration or asphyxiation can cause death, magnesium deficiency can directly lead to cancer. When you consider that over 300 enzymes and ion transport require magnesium and that its role in fatty acid and phospholipid acid metabolism affects permeability and stability of membranes, we can see that magnesium deficiency would lead to physiological decline in cells setting the stage for cancer. Anything that weakens cell physiology will lead to the infections that surround and penetrate tumor tissues. These infections are proving to be an integral part of cancer. Magnesium deficiency poses a direct threat to the health of our cells. Without sufficient amounts, our cells calcify and rot in. Breeding grounds for yeast and fungi colonies they become, invaders all too ready to strangle our life force and kill us.

Over 300 different enzymes systems rely upon magnesium to facilitate their catalytic action, including ATP metabolism, creatine-kinase activation, adenylate-cyclase, and sodium-potassium-ATPase.

It is known that carcinogenesis induces magnesium distribution disturbances, which cause magnesium mobilization through blood cells and magnesium depletion in non-neoplastic tissues. Magnesium deficiency seems to be carcinogenic, and in case of solid tumors, a high level of supplemented magnesium inhibits carcinogenesis. Both carcinogenesis and magnesium deficiency increase the plasma membrane permeability and fluidity. Scientists have in fact found out that there is much less Mg++ binding to membrane phospholipids of cancer cells, than to normal cell membranes.

Magnesium protects cells from aluminum, mercury, lead, cadmium, beryllium and nickel.

Magnesium in general is essential for the survival of our cells but takes on further importance in the age of toxicity where our bodies are being bombarded on a daily basis with heavy metals. Glutathione requires magnesium for its synthesis. Glutathione synthetase requires y-glutamyl cysteine, glycine, ATP, and magnesium ions to form glutathione. In magnesium deficiency, the enzyme y-glutamyl transpeptidase is lowered. According to Dr. Russell Blaylock, low magnesium is associated with dramatic increases in free radical generation as well as glutathione depletion and this is vital since glutathione is one of the few antioxidant molecules known to neutralize mercury. Without the cleaning and chelating work of glutathione (magnesium), cells begin to decay as cellular filth and heavy metals accumulate; excellent environments to attract deadly infection/cancer.

There is drastic change in ionic flux from the outer and inner cell membranes both in the impaired
membranes of cancer, and in Mg deficiency.

Anghileri et al proposed that modifications of cell membranes are principal triggering factors in cell transformation leading to cancer. Using cells from induced cancers, they found that there is much less magnesium binding to membrane phospholipids of cancer cells, than to normal cell membranes. It has been suggested that Mg deficiency may trigger carcinogenesis by increasing membrane permeability. Magnesium deficient cell membranes seem to have a smoother surface than normal, and decreased membrane viscosity, analogous to changes in human leukemia cells. There is drastic change in ionic flux from the outer and inner cell membranes (higher Ca and Na; lower Mg and K levels), both in the impaired membranes of cancer, and of Mg deficiency. And we find that lead (Pb) salts are more leukemogenic when given to Mg deficient rats, than when they are given to Mg-adequate rats, suggesting that Mg is protective.

Magnesium has an effect on a variety of cell membranes through a process involving calcium channels and ion transport mechanisms. Magnesium is responsible for the maintenance of the trans-membrane gradients of sodium and potassium.

Long ago, researchers postulated that magnesium supplementation of those who are Mg deficient, like chronic alcoholics, might decrease emergence of malignancies and now modern researchers have found that all types of alcohol — wine, beer or liquor — add equally to the risk of developing breast cancer in women. The researchers, led by Dr. Arthur Klatsky of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program in Oakland, Calif., revealed their findings at a meeting of the European Cancer Organization in Barcelona in late 2007. It was found that women who had one or two drinks a day increased their risk of developing breast cancer by 10 percent. Women who had more than three drinks a day raised their risk by 30 percent. The more one drinks, the more one drives down magnesium levels.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer killer of women, after lung cancer. It will be diagnosed in 1.2 million people globally this year and will kill 500,000.

According to data published in the British Journal of Cancer in 2002, 4 percent of all breast cancers — about 44,000 cases a year — in the United Kingdom are due to alcohol consumption. It’s an important question though, and one not asked by medical or health officials, is it the alcohol itself or the resultant drop in magnesium levels that is cancer provoking? Though some studies have shown that light to moderate alcohol use can protect against heart attacks, it does us no good to drink if it causes cancer. Perhaps if magnesium was supplemented in women drinkers who were studied, there would have been no increase of cancer from drinking.

Alcohol has always been known to deplete magnesium, and is one of the first supplements given to alcoholics when they stop and attempt to detoxify and withdraw.

Researchers from the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota have just concluded that diets rich in magnesium reduced the occurrence of colon cancer. A previous study from Sweden reported that women with the highest magnesium intake had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing the cancer than those with the lowest intake of the mineral.

Pretreatment hypomagnesemia has been reported in young leukemic children, 78% of whom have histories
of anorexia, and have excessive gut and urinary losses of Mg.

Several studies have shown an increased cancer rate in regions with low magnesium levels in soil and drinking water, and the same for selenium. In Egypt, the cancer rate was only about 10% of that in Europe and America. In the rural fellah, it was practically non-existent. The main difference was an extremely high magnesium intake of 2.5 to 3g in these cancer-free populations, ten times more than in most western countries.

The School of Public Health at the Kaohsiung Medical College in Taiwan found that magnesium also exerts a protective effect against gastric cancer, but only for the group with the highest levels.

If we looked, it would probably be very difficult to find a cancer patient with anywhere near normal levels of cellular magnesium; meaning cancer probably does not exist in a physical cellular environment full of magnesium. It makes perfect medical sense to saturate the body with magnesium through transdermal means. Magnesium deficiency has been implicated in a host of clinical disorders but the medical establishment just cannot get it through its thick skull that it is an important medicine.

It is as if the collective medical profession had just pulled the plug on medical intelligence. In fact it has done exactly this and it seems too late for it to redefine itself, which is a tragedy. Though magnesium improves the internal production of defensive substances, such as antibodies and considerably improves the operational activity of white granulocytic blood cells (shown by Delbert with magnesium chloride), and contributes to many other functions that insure the integrity of cellular metabolism, no one thinks to use it in cancer as a primary treatment. It is even worse than this, the medical establishment does not even use magnesium as a secondary treatment or even use it at all and gladly uses radiation and chemo therapy, both of which force magnesium levels down further.

To not replete cellular magnesium levels would be negligent, especially in the case of cancer where a person’s life is on the line. An oncologist who ignores his patient’s magnesium levels would be analogous to an emergency room physician not rushing resuscitation when a person stops breathing. If one elects to have or has already had chemotherapy, they have four times the reason to pay attention to a concentrated protocol aimed at replenishing full magnesium cellular stores.

Magnesium chloride is the first and most important item in any person’s cancer treatment strategy. Put in the clearest terms possible, our suggestion from the first day on the Survival Medicine Cancer Protocol is to almost drown oneself in transdermally applied magnesium chloride. It should be the first, not the last thing, we think of when it comes to cancer. It takes about three to four months to drive up cellular magnesium levels to where they should be when treated intensely transdermally but within days patients will commonly experience its life saving medical/healing effects. For many people whose bodies are starving for magnesium, the experience is not too much different than for a person coming out of a desert desperate for water. It is that basic to life, that important, that necessary.

That same power found in magnesium that will save your life in the emergency room during cardiac arrest, that will diminish damage of a stroke if administered in a timely fashion, is the same power that can save one’s life if one has cancer. All a patient has to do is pour it into their baths or spray it right onto their bodies. What could be simpler?

Magnesium chloride, when applied directly to the skin, is transdermally absorbed and has an
almost immediate effect on chronic and acute pain.

Special Note on Calcium and Cancer:

Experts say excessive calcium intake may be unwise in light of recent studies showing that high amounts of the mineral may increase risk of prostate cancer. “There is reasonable evidence to suggest that calcium may play an important role in the development of prostate cancer,” says Dr. Carmen Rodriguez, senior epidemiologist in the epidemiology and surveillance research department of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Rodriguez says that a 1998 Harvard School of Public Health study of 47,781 men found those consuming between 1,500 and 1,999 mg of calcium per day had about double the risk of being diagnosed with metastatic (cancer that has spread to other parts of the body) prostate cancer as those getting 500 mg per day or less. And those taking in 2,000 mg or more had over four times the risk of developing metastatic prostate cancer as those taking in less than 500 mg.

Calcium and magnesium are opposites in their effects on our body structure. As a general rule, the more rigid and inflexible our body structure is, the less calcium and the more magnesium we need.

Later in 1998, Harvard researchers published a study of dairy product intake among 526 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and 536 similar men not diagnosed with the disease. That study found a 50% increase in prostate cancer risk and a near doubling of risk of metastatic prostate cancer among men consuming high amounts of dairy products, likely due, say the researchers, to the high total amount of calcium in such a diet. The most recent Harvard study on the topic, published in October 2001, looked at dairy product intake among 20,885 men and found men consuming the most dairy products had about 32% higher risk of developing prostate cancer than those consuming the least.

The adverse effects of excessive calcium intake may include high blood calcium levels, kidney stone formation and kidney complications. Elevated calcium levels are also associated with arthritic/joint and vascular degeneration, calcification of soft tissue, hypertension and stroke, and increase in VLDL triglycerides, gastrointestinal disturbances, mood and depressive disorders, chronic fatigue, and general mineral imbalances including magnesium, zinc, iron and phosphorus. High calcium levels interfere with Vitamin D and subsequently inhibit the vitamin’s cancer protective effect unless extra amounts of Vitamin D are supplemented.

Magnesium is the mineral of rejuvenation and prevents the calcification of our organs and tissues that is characteristic of the old-age related degeneration of our body.

Recommendations of magnesium to calcium ratios range from 1:2 to 1:1. For those interested in preventing cancer, one should look closely at the 1:1 camp and during the first six months of treatment, one should be looking at ten parts magnesium to one part calcium. In reality, one need not even count the ratio during the first months for the only real danger of extremely high magnesium levels comes with patients suffering from kidney failure. If one is at all concerned about their calcium intake, one should eat foods high in both calcium and magnesium like toasted sesame seeds.

Up to 30% of the energy of cells is used to pump calcium out of the cells.

Doctors who have used intravenous magnesium treatments know the benefits of peaking magnesium levels, even if only temporarily. For the cancer patient the transdermal approach combined with oral use offers the opportunity to take magnesium levels up strongly and quickly. For emergency situations, three applications a day; for urgent situations, two treatments would be indicated though one strong treatment with an ounce of a natural magnesium chloride solution spread all over the body like a sun screen is a powerful systemic treatment.

It is medical wisdom that tells us that magnesium is actually the key to the body’s proper assimilation and use of calcium, as well as other important nutrients. If we consume too much calcium, without sufficient magnesium, the excess calcium is not utilized correctly and may actually become toxic, causing painful conditions in the body. Hypocalcemia is a prominent manifestation of magnesium deficiency in humans (Rude et al., 1976). Even mild degrees of magnesium depletion significantly decreases the serum calcium concentration (Fatemi et al., 1991).

Calcium requirement for men and women is lower than previously estimated.

In an abstract written by Pendleton JM, Tan WW, Anai S, Chang M, Hou W, Shiverick KT, Rosser CJ in which it was found that “Dietary intervention with isoflavone supplementation has biologic activity in men with biochemical recurrent prostate cancer as shown by a decline in the slope of PSA. This study provides additional support to the literature that nutritional supplements have biologic activity in prostate cancer and therefore, further, studies with these agents in randomized clinical trials should be encouraged.”

While it is encouraging to have independent studies provide evidence that nutritional or natural supplementation works in helping the body in its fight against cancer, the real solution to the problems lies in complete nutrition.

The benefits of say vitamin D, Selenium, beta-sitosterols, isoflavines, vitamin C, etc. is in ingesting these vitamins and minerals in their complete complex natural form. Isolating one compound from the rest and loading up on that one is not how the body works. Sometimes trace elements have more power when combined with the main nutritional value of the fruit/vegetable we are eating that actually packs the punch we are looking for. There are reasons nature made our life-based, plant provided nutrients in the unique combinations of each plant.

I believe we should consume our foods in their most complete, natural form as possible to derive all of the benefits associated with each compound. Once you give your immune system the ammunition to mount up a good defense against disease, it will heal itself. But you have to give your system those weapons to use.

It is good that there will be more randomized clinical trials to further the advancement in understanding how to beat cancer, or any disease, with phytonutrients or phytoceuticals, it just seems to make more sense to me to find out why all of the compounds in a particular source work instead of isolating one and attempting to make a “magic bullet” out if it. That’s not the answer….complete nutrition including proper supplementation where needed is.

It has been my personal belief that prostate, breast, ovarian and cervical cancers are all related due to the fact that they are cancers of the reproductive system in human beings. In a report issued by the Clinical Cancer Research center in which the correlation between the BRCA2 gene mutation and these types of cancers were studied. This report came out of Sydney, Australia in which it was found that:

A mutated gene seen as a factor in breast cancer can also expose men to a four times higher risk of prostate cancer, the scientists said, describing confirmation of the link as a world first.

The research was funded by Australia’s National Breast Cancer Foundation and carried out by researchers at kConFab, an Australian and New Zealand consortium for research into
familial breast cancer. The consortium has been investigating families with multiple cases of breast and ovarian cancer for 10 years and noticed that prostate cancer was also common in some of the families, said kConFab national manager Heather Thorne.

Those families carried a mutation in the BRCA2 gene, which is passed from one generation to the next, and “this led us to explore whether these prostate cancers were caused by the genetic fault running in the family,” she said.

“We discovered that a man with a genetic fault in BRCA2 has almost four times the risk of developing prostate cancer than men in the general population. The BRCA2-prostate cancers that arise in these men also tend to be more aggressive”. It was hoped the discovery would lead men to assess their personal risk in the same way women already do with breast and ovarian cancer, Thorne said in a statement.

“If a man comes from a family with multiple cases of breast or ovarian cancer, or knows there is a BRCA2 gene mutation running in their family, they may be at increased risk of developing prostate cancer.”

“Breast cancer survivors who find they have a mutation in the BRCA2 gene will also now know that their brothers or sons could be at increased risk of prostate cancer”, she said.

In addition to the advancement in finding biomarkers, etc. it is my hope that this will facilitate the combining of research funding as well as a cross-reference of therapies to treat cancer of the reproductive system for men and women.

This is the direction I would like to see future research and funding take, a sharing of resources, findings and funding. Until next time…

One of the better blogs that I read on a regular basis is from Joel at the AdvancedProstateCancer.net blog. He writes the more interesting and informative blogs out there. Today I read his post and would like to copy it here for all of us.

After putting up this post, I am going to www.cancer.org/cps3 to sign up myself to hopefully participate in this long-term, cancer prevention study. Thank you again, Joel for a very informative post on how all of us can help each other prove there is a cure for cancer, or all disease and it is proper diet and nutrition.

As always,

ACS Begins Large Scale Study On Cancer Prevention

Now there is an opportunity for your friends, family members, neighbors and coworkers who want to fight back against prostate cancer in your honor? They have the opportunity to take part in an historic research effort being conducted by the American Cancer Society where they can indeed fight back in a very easy way.

The American Cancer Society is recruiting 500,000 men and women who have never been diagnosed with any type of cancer for a new study called Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). CPS-3 will help us better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause and prevent cancer, ultimately helping to eliminate cancer as a major health concern.

Individuals are eligible to participate if they:

* are between the ages of 30 and 65
* have never personally been diagnosed with cancer (not including basal or squamous cell skin cancer)
* are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study, which simply means completing periodic follow-up surveys.

Enrollment will be taking place at select American Cancer Society events in 2008, with additional sites to be selected through 2011. The enrollment process is a simple, two-phase process, one phase takes place at home, the other at select community events. At the local community event individuals will complete a brief survey, have their waist circumference measured, and provide a blood sample. At home, individuals will complete a more detailed survey regarding lifestyle, behavioral and other health-related factors.

For more information, including enrollment information, please visit www.cancer.org/cps3 or e-mail: cps3@cancer.org.

This is a chance for those in your life who have never been diagnosed with cancer to make a difference in the lives of others, helping to change the face of cancer. Please forward this message on to those you know who want to take up the fight!

Joel T Nowak MA, MSW

For all of us blessed to have not receive a diagnosis of cancer, let’s make that long-term commitment, not only to ourselves, but to those who are battling cancer, or who are on the verge of being diagnosed.

In an article published in the February 2007 edition of The Natural Standard, entitled Tomatoes and Broccoli for Prostate Cancer, researchers at the University of Illinois and James Cancer Hospital along with Solove Research Institute evaluated combinations of tomato and broccoli.

Two-hundred six male Copenhagen rats were fed diets containing 10% tomato, 10% broccoli, 5% tomato plus 5% broccoli (5:5 combination), 10% broccoli plus 10% tomato (10:10 combination) powders, or lycopene (23 or 224 nmol/g diet) for approximately 22 weeks starting one month prior to receiving the tumor implants.

The researchers then compared the effects of the diet to surgical castration or finasteride. Castration reduced prostate weights, tumor area and tumor weight, whereas finasteride reduced prostate weights, but had no effect on tumor area or weight. Either way, I’m thinking surgical castration???? Not an option!

Lycopene at 23 or 224 nmol/g of the diet insignificantly reduced rumor weights by 7% or 185, respectively. Whereas tomato reduced weight by 34%, Broccoli decreased tumor weights by 42%. However, the 10:10 combination caused a 52% decrease!

The researchers concluded that the combination of tomato and broccoli was more effective at slowing tumor growth than tomato or broccoli alone, supporting public health recommendations to increase the intake of a variety of plant components.

As an aside, the receive the highest benefits of lycopene, tomatoes should be cooked. The process of cooking the tomatoes releases higher amounts of lycopene. So guys, give this a try. What can it do besides, give you additional nutritional benefits and it tastes great too and in the process, should you have prostate cancer, it should help to reduce the size of the tumor.

Every little bit you can give to your body to help it fight the cancer that doesn’t have to do with chemotherapy or synthetic drugs, I would think would be at the top of the list of priorities.

There is significant amounts of evidence-based research to prove changing your diet and lifestyle at the onset of prostate cancer, or any cancer for that matter, can either slow the progression of or prevent cancer all together. But that is the subject of another post!

Until then, as always……

In several of the men’s health issues groups some have lamented that congress does not provide as much funding for prostate cancer as they do for breast cancer. I do have something to add to that:

Yes, the research funding at this point in time is weighted in favor of breast cancer research, however, for decades there had been absolutely no funding for women’s health issues at all. All cardiac research, etc. was performed on males and it was assumed that cardiovascular issues were the same for women as men. We now know that isn’t true.

Women have had to fight for many years to get noticed, to put our health issues before the public. Prior to this, we received little to no funding whatsoever as the mainstream assumption was that health conditions were the same for females as males.

Another issue I have with the billions and billions of dollars spent on ‘research’ is that there is very little sharing of findings between disciplines. Hello??? The cure for cancer is here staring us in the face and it starts with proper nutrition. That’s another post I will be getting to.

So, please, support the request for more funding for prostate cancer…as there is more than one way to skin a cat, so to speak! If we all come together with the answers that we already have, we could make so much more progress on prevention of disease than reacting to it in finding a cure. After all, that ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure!

Til next time…..
