Isoflavone Supplementation has Biologic Activity in Prostate Cancer

In an abstract written by Pendleton JM, Tan WW, Anai S, Chang M, Hou W, Shiverick KT, Rosser CJ in which it was found that “Dietary intervention with isoflavone supplementation has biologic activity in men with biochemical recurrent prostate cancer as shown by a decline in the slope of PSA. This study provides additional support to the literature that nutritional supplements have biologic activity in prostate cancer and therefore, further, studies with these agents in randomized clinical trials should be encouraged.”

While it is encouraging to have independent studies provide evidence that nutritional or natural supplementation works in helping the body in its fight against cancer, the real solution to the problems lies in complete nutrition.

The benefits of say vitamin D, Selenium, beta-sitosterols, isoflavines, vitamin C, etc. is in ingesting these vitamins and minerals in their complete complex natural form. Isolating one compound from the rest and loading up on that one is not how the body works. Sometimes trace elements have more power when combined with the main nutritional value of the fruit/vegetable we are eating that actually packs the punch we are looking for. There are reasons nature made our life-based, plant provided nutrients in the unique combinations of each plant.

I believe we should consume our foods in their most complete, natural form as possible to derive all of the benefits associated with each compound. Once you give your immune system the ammunition to mount up a good defense against disease, it will heal itself. But you have to give your system those weapons to use.

It is good that there will be more randomized clinical trials to further the advancement in understanding how to beat cancer, or any disease, with phytonutrients or phytoceuticals, it just seems to make more sense to me to find out why all of the compounds in a particular source work instead of isolating one and attempting to make a “magic bullet” out if it. That’s not the answer….complete nutrition including proper supplementation where needed is.

Until we meet again…
